Fraction & decimal converter
MathNo. 05 / 24approved
Two directions, one widget: fractions become decimals and decimals become fractions — including the stubborn repeating ones. Simplified, mixed and honest.
a fraction is just division being shy about it. we coax it out.

most-used utilities
Half of anything
1/2 is the friendliest fraction. 0.5 agrees.
Cooking conversion
3/4 of a cup, because the recipe hates round numbers.
Pipe size
5/16 of an inch. Everything in a workshop is 5/16.
Pixel perfect
0.875 is 7/8. Your ruler just smiled.
One third, properly
0.(3) is 1/3 — proof that the cycle ends where it starts.
Drill bit
1/4 of an inch. The drill bit, the wrench, the everything.
A fair split
0.2 is 1/5. The fairest cut of all.
pro tips
A fraction is an unfinished division. Finish it and you get a decimal.
If the denominator is only built from 2s and 5s, the decimal ends. Otherwise it repeats — like that song you can't unhear.
Simplify fractions like you simplify excuses — divide by the biggest common thing.
what it does
Both directions in one place. Type a fraction and get its decimal; type a decimal and get the fraction it's hiding. Everything updates as you type — no buttons, no "show your work" (okay, a little show your work, we like it).
Fractions become decimals by doing the division they were always asking for. Decimals become fractions by reverse engineering: we rebuild the fraction, simplify it to its most honest form, and politely mention the mixed number too.
The stubborn cases are covered: a repeating decimal like 0.1(6) becomes 1/6, because the cycle ends where it begins, and a fraction like 1/6 tells you its decimal repeats forever instead of pretending it doesn't.
Use it for the small daily maths that hates round numbers: converting a recipe's 3/4 cup, turning a 5/16 drill size into a decimal for the store, or translating 0.875 into 7/8 when the plans speak fractions and the calculator speaks decimals. It handles both directions, and it never complains about carrying the one.
quick answers
How do you turn a fraction into a decimal?
Divide the numerator by the denominator. The widget does it and tells you if the decimal repeats instead of pretending it ends.
What does 0.1(6) mean?
It means 0.16666… — the 6 repeats forever. Type it with the parentheses and you'll get exactly 1/6 back.
Why do you show both improper and mixed fractions?
3/2 and "1 1/2" are the same number. Some contexts want one, some want the other; we give you both so nobody argues.
How do you simplify?
We divide numerator and denominator by their greatest common divisor until they can't go any lower — the most honest form of the fraction.
